Suddenly September

Lonely yellow leaf
floats out to the aqua deep--
summer rides on it.

I'm still lamenting the end of our summer's brief respite on Lake Superior! Time is fleeting, joy is ephemeral, and the holidays are only a blink away.
So much seems to happen at this time of year, late summer/early autumn. It's the fifth anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001. We've lived through the first anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, and now the famous crocodile hunter, Steve Irwin, has been killed by a stingray in the Australian Great Barrier Reef.
Yesterday was Labor Day, and Mamie Rogers, Vicksburg's oldest reside
nt, died at the age of 109. This is not a castle. It's a fire ring on the shore of Lake Superior, built in the style of "Rivers and Streams," some PBS nature documentary. How clever, the fellow who built it!
